designated hitter
Pitcher's offensive replacement
In baseball, a designated hitter is a player who bats in place of the pitcher but does not play a defensive position.
The rule, adopted by the American League in 1973 and by the National League in 2022, allows teams to keep strong hitters in the lineup without requiring them to field.
Informally shortened to DH, the term also works as a verb: He's been DHing all season.
The phrase sometimes extends figuratively to anyone brought in specifically to handle one task.
