cautery
Heat-based wound closure
Cautery is the medical practice of burning tissue to destroy it, stop bleeding, or prevent infection.
The term applies both to the technique and to the instrument used—historically a heated metal rod, now more commonly an electric device.
A doctor might use cautery to seal a wound or remove abnormal tissue.
The surgeon applied cautery to stop the bleeding.
The adjective form is cauterizing or cauterant.
