eschar

Dead tissue covering

An eschar is a dry, dark piece of dead tissue—the scab that forms over a severe burn or wound as it heals.

In medical contexts, eschars may need to be removed (debrided) because they can harbor infection or prevent healthy tissue from regenerating beneath: The surgeon removed the eschar to assess the wound bed.
