local anesthesia
Targeted pain blocking
Local anesthesia is the loss of sensation in a specific area of the body, induced by drugs that block nerve signals without affecting consciousness.
A dentist administers local anesthesia before filling a cavity; a surgeon uses it for minor procedures.
The patient stays awake but feels no pain in the treated area.
Contrast with general anesthesia, which renders the patient unconscious.
