barber-surgeons

Bloodletters and shavers

Barber-surgeons were practitioners who performed both barbering and minor surgical procedures, common from the Middle Ages through the 18th century.

They cut hair and shaved beards but also extracted teeth, set bones, and let blood.

The red-and-white barber pole symbolizes this history—red for blood, white for bandages.

The professions eventually split into separate trades.
