castration anxiety

Freudian psychosexual fear

Castration anxiety is a psychoanalytic concept describing a boy's unconscious fear of losing his penis, typically as punishment from his father for desiring his mother.

Freud considered it central to the Oedipus complex and male psychological development.

The term extends loosely to any male anxiety about emasculation or loss of power: His obsession with sports cars seems like castration anxiety in action.
