intrusive thought

Unwelcome brain visitor

An intrusive thought is an unwanted mental image, urge, or idea that enters consciousness unbidden—often disturbing, violent, or taboo in nature.

The term comes from psychology, where intrusive thoughts are recognized as normal experiences that become problematic only when they cause significant distress or compulsive responses: Everyone has intrusive thoughts; the key is not to dwell on them.
