casbah
North African fortress
A casbah is the old fortified quarter of a North African city, typically featuring narrow winding streets, traditional architecture, and dense residential areas.
The term often evokes images of labyrinthine markets and ancient walls: We got lost in the casbah of Algiers.
Sometimes spelled kasbah.
