decarburizing
Stripping steel's carbon
Decarburizing is the process of removing carbon from metal, especially steel.
Heat treatment in certain atmospheres causes carbon atoms to migrate to the surface and escape, leaving a softer, weaker outer layer.
Metalworkers generally try to prevent decarburizing, though sometimes it's done deliberately to improve ductility for forming operations.
