devolatilization
Driving off gases
Devolatilization is the removal of volatile substances from a material, typically through heating.
In industrial processes, coal or biomass undergoes devolatilization to drive off gases and leave behind char or coke.
The term appears in chemistry, metallurgy, and polymer processing: Devolatilization occurs rapidly when the material reaches critical temperature.
