canebrake

Dense bamboo grove

A canebrake is a dense thicket of cane—tall, bamboo-like grasses that grow in wetlands and along riverbanks, especially in the American South.

These thickets were once common along the Mississippi and its tributaries, providing habitat for wildlife and cover for fugitives.

We pushed through the canebrake toward the river.
