cancer staging

Disease extent assessment

Cancer staging is a system for describing how far a cancer has spread in the body, typically using Roman numerals I through IV.

Stage I indicates localized disease; stage IV means the cancer has metastasized to distant organs.

Staging guides treatment decisions and helps predict outcomes: The biopsy confirmed stage II breast cancer.

Different cancers use specialized staging criteria, but higher numbers consistently indicate more advanced disease.
