sentinel node
First drainage station
A sentinel node is the first lymph node to which cancer cells are likely to spread from a primary tumor.
Surgeons identify and remove it for biopsy to determine whether cancer has metastasized: The sentinel node was clear, so no further lymph nodes were removed.
In computer science, a sentinel node is a dummy node placed at the boundary of a data structure to simplify edge-case handling.
