stage four
Most advanced progression
Stage four describes the most advanced or severe phase of a disease, especially cancer.
In oncology staging systems, stage four indicates the cancer has spread (metastasized) to distant organs: She was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.
Outside medicine, stage four sometimes describes anything at its most extreme or dire point: My procrastination has reached stage four.
