calibre

Gun tube width

Calibre is the British spelling of caliber.

The word refers to the internal diameter of a gun barrel or the diameter of a bullet or shell: a .45 calibre pistol.

Extended to mean quality or capacity: a writer of the highest calibre, I doubted whether he had the calibre for the job.

The measurement sense grounds the metaphor—judging someone's calibre is sizing them up.
