caduceus

Winged snake staff

A caduceus is a staff with two serpents wound around it, topped by wings—the symbol of the Greek god Hermes.

It's often mistakenly used as a medical symbol, though the correct medical emblem is the rod of Asclepius, which has only one snake and no wings.

The confusion is widespread, particularly in American healthcare imagery.
