afrobeat

Nigerian polyrhythmic fusion

Afrobeat is a music genre that blends West African musical styles with American funk, jazz, and soul.

Nigerian musician Fela Kuti pioneered the sound in the 1960s and 70s, characterized by complex rhythms, extended compositions, and often politically charged lyrics.

The genre has influenced contemporary African and global popular music: The club's DJ mixed afrobeat with electronic dance music. (Capitalized Afrobeat is an alternate form.)
