barrage balloon
Tethered defensive float
A barrage balloon is a large unmanned balloon anchored by cables, used to defend against low-flying aircraft.
The cables create hazards for enemy planes attempting bombing runs or strafing.
Barrage balloons were deployed extensively over cities and military installations during World War II: Barrage balloons floated above London during the Blitz.
