burlwood

Swirled grain wood

Burlwood is wood cut from a burl—a rounded, knotty growth on a tree trunk caused by stress or disease.

The grain swirls in complex, irregular patterns prized for decorative woodworking: a burlwood dashboard, burlwood veneer on the cabinet.

Also spelled as two words: burl wood.
