ice boxes
Fridges' insulated ancestors
Ice boxes are insulated containers that keep food cold.
Before electric refrigeration became widespread in the mid-twentieth century, ice boxes were cabinets cooled by blocks of ice delivered regularly to homes.
Now the term usually means portable coolers for picnics and camping: We packed the ice boxes with drinks for the tailgate.
