pullets

Immature female chickens

Pullets are young hens, specifically female chickens less than a year old that have begun laying eggs or are about to.

The term distinguishes them from chicks (too young) and mature hens (fully grown).

Farmers and backyard chicken keepers use the word when discussing egg production: We bought six pullets at the feed store.
