grow-out
Letting roots show
Grow-out refers to the process of letting something reach its natural state by allowing growth to occur, most often hair returning to its original color or texture after chemical treatment: She's in the awkward grow-out phase between pixie and bob.
In aquaculture, grow-out is the period when fish or shellfish are raised to market size.
The term captures both the waiting and the gradual transformation involved.
