brigs

Ships' detention cells

Brigs are two-masted sailing vessels with square sails on both masts, commonly used for trade and naval purposes from the 18th through 19th centuries.

The term also refers to prison cells or detention areas on naval ships, where sailors who violated regulations were confined.

This nautical jail sense extends to military prisons generally: He spent a week in the brig for going AWOL.
