brigantines

Square-rigged sailing ships

Brigantines are two-masted sailing vessels with a fully square-rigged foremast and a fore-and-aft rigged mainmast.

Popular from the 17th through 19th centuries, they combined the speed of square sails with the maneuverability of fore-and-aft rigging, making them versatile for both merchant shipping and naval operations.

The name derives from brigand, as such vessels were once favored by Mediterranean pirates.

The brigantines made good time running before the wind.
