A box stall is an enclosed compartment in a stable or barn where a horse can move freely, as opposed to a tie stall where the animal is tethered.
Box stalls typically measure at least ten feet square, giving the horse room to turn around and lie down: Each horse had its own box stall with fresh bedding.
