undue influence
Coercive sway over
Undue influence is pressure that overcomes someone's free will in making decisions, especially regarding contracts, wills, or other legal matters.
The influence isn't merely persuasive but exploits a position of trust or power: The court invalidated the will, finding the caretaker had exercised undue influence over the elderly woman.
The term appears most often in legal contexts where one party's judgment was improperly shaped by another.
