coercive control
Controlling through fear
Coercive control is a pattern of behavior in which one person dominates another through tactics like isolation, intimidation, monitoring, and restricting access to resources.
Unlike individual acts of abuse, coercive control describes an ongoing campaign that strips away autonomy and creates fear.
The term emerged from domestic violence research and has gained legal recognition in some jurisdictions as a form of abuse even without physical violence.
The prosecution argued that years of coercive control had left her unable to leave the relationship.
