brain regions
Cerebral functional zones
Brain regions are anatomically or functionally distinct areas of the brain, each associated with particular processes: the hippocampus with memory, the amygdala with emotion, the prefrontal cortex with planning and decision-making.
Neuroscientists map these regions to understand how different parts contribute to cognition, sensation, and behavior: Damage to specific brain regions can impair language or movement.
