dhows
Lateen-rigged cargo vessels
Dhows are traditional sailing vessels with triangular lateen sails, used for centuries in the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean, and along the coasts of East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
These wooden boats served as the primary means of trade across these waters, carrying goods like spices, textiles, and slaves.
The term now applies broadly to various single-masted Arab trading ships.
Dhows still sail the waters around Zanzibar, some now carrying tourists rather than cargo.
