Bumpkins are unsophisticated rural people, often portrayed as naive or socially awkward when encountering city life.
The word carries condescension—it's what urbanites call country folk they consider backward: Those bumpkins have never seen a subway.
Sometimes softened with country before it, the term remains mildly insulting.
