topmasts
Sails' high supports
Topmasts are the second section of a sailing ship's mast, extending above the lower mast.
Traditional tall ships built their masts in segments rather than single poles, with the topmast fitted atop the main structure to carry upper sails.
The crew lowered the topmasts before the storm hit.
