oestrus

Fertile female phase

Oestrus is the period when a female mammal is fertile and receptive to mating—what's commonly called being in heat.

The term appears mainly in scientific and veterinary contexts.

Most mammals have distinct oestrus cycles; humans are unusual in that female sexual receptivity isn't limited to fertile periods.

Also spelled estrus, especially in American English.
