flystrike

Larvae eating flesh

Flystrike is a condition where flies lay eggs on an animal—typically sheep—and the hatched larvae feed on the living flesh.

Also called myiasis.

It occurs when fleece or wounds stay damp, attracting blowflies.

Left untreated, flystrike causes severe tissue damage and death.

The farmer checked the flock daily for signs of flystrike.
