bullet ant
Excruciating jungle insect
A bullet ant is a large tropical American ant whose sting is considered the most painful of any insect—reportedly comparable to being shot, hence the name.
Indigenous peoples of Brazil use bullet ant stings in initiation rituals, where young men must endure wearing gloves filled with the ants.
The bullet ant tops the Schmidt pain index.
