master file
Central data repository
A master file is a primary collection of records that serves as the authoritative source for a particular set of data.
In computing and record-keeping, it contains the most current and complete information—customer accounts, employee records, inventory items—against which transactions are processed and updates are made.
The payroll system pulls employee data from the master file.
