booting

Powering up initially

Booting is starting up a computer—the process where the machine loads its operating system and becomes ready for use.

The term comes from "bootstrap," evoking the impossible task of pulling oneself up by one's bootstraps, since the computer must use its own basic instructions to load more complex ones.

Rebooting means restarting.

Have you tried booting it in safe mode?

Separately, booting can mean kicking someone or something, or attaching a wheel clamp to a parked car: They're booting cars that haven't paid their tickets.
