shutting down
Ceasing all operations
Shutting down is the process of closing or ceasing operation.
A computer shuts down when powered off; a factory shuts down when it stops production.
The phrase extends to ending conversations or dismissing someone: She tried to explain but he kept shutting her down.
To shut down can also mean becoming emotionally unresponsive: After the argument, he just shut down completely.
