body mass index
Obesity screening metric
Body mass index is a measure of body fat based on height and weight, calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared.
Medical professionals use it to screen for weight categories: underweight, normal, overweight, and obese.
The measure has limitations—it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes may register as overweight.
Usually abbreviated BMI: Her BMI is in the normal range.
