blitzes

Sudden overwhelming offensives

Blitzes is the plural of blitz and its verb form.

A blitz is a sudden, intensive attack or effort—from the German word for lightning.

The original blitz was the Nazi bombing campaign against Britain in 1940–41.

Now any concentrated burst of activity qualifies: a media blitz, a cleaning blitz.

In American football, a blitz is a defensive rush past the line of scrimmage: The linebacker blitzes on third down.
