zone defense
Territorial guarding strategy
Zone defense is a strategy in team sports where each player guards a designated area of the court or field rather than a specific opponent.
Common in basketball and football, it contrasts with man-to-man defense: They switched to a zone defense to protect the paint.
Figuratively, it can describe dividing responsibilities by territory rather than task.
