blaxploitation
Seventies soul films
Blaxploitation refers to a genre of American films from the early 1970s featuring Black actors in action roles, often with funk soundtracks and urban settings.
The term blends "Black" and "exploitation," acknowledging that while these films provided rare leading roles for Black performers, they frequently traded in stereotypes of pimps, drug dealers, and street violence.
Titles like *Shaft*, *Super Fly*, and *Foxy Brown* defined the style.
The term now applies broadly to media that exploits Black culture for profit: The show's portrayal of inner-city life felt like blaxploitation.
