Curtis Mayfield

Curtis Mayfield was an American soul and R&B singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose work shaped the sound of 1960s and 1970s Black music.

With the Impressions, he wrote anthems of the civil rights era like "People Get Ready." His 1972 *Superfly* soundtrack became a landmark of socially conscious funk.

A 1990 stage accident left him paralyzed; he continued recording until his death in 1999.
