wah-wah

Muted trumpet sound

Wah-wah is a sound effect in music created by altering tone to mimic a voice saying "wah." On electric guitar, a wah-wah pedal rocks back and forth to produce the effect: Hendrix's wah-wah on that solo is iconic.

Wah-wah also describes the muted trumpet sound in jazz, achieved with a plunger mute.

The term can mockingly represent adult speech reduced to meaningless noise, as in the *Peanuts* cartoons where teachers speak in trombone wah-wahs.
