Oscar bait
Awards-season tearjerker
Oscar bait is a film perceived as designed to win Academy Awards rather than to tell a genuine story.
Such films typically feature prestige elements—historical settings, social issues, disability, biopics of artists or activists—deployed in ways that feel calculated: The Holocaust drama felt like shameless Oscar bait.
The term is dismissive, implying the filmmakers prioritized award recognition over artistic integrity.
