bivouacking

Sleeping under stars

Bivouacking is setting up a temporary camp, especially outdoors with minimal shelter.

The term comes from military use—soldiers bivouacking sleep in the field rather than in barracks or permanent quarters.

Climbers and hikers also bivouac when caught by darkness or weather: We ended up bivouacking on a ledge halfway up the face.
