chigger
Tiny itchy pest
Chiggers are the tiny larvae of certain mites that attach to skin and cause intense itching.
Found in tall grass and wooded areas, they burrow into skin—particularly around ankles, waistbands, and other tight spots—leaving red welts that itch for days: I got eaten up by chiggers on that hike.
Also called redbugs or harvest mites.
