bilberries

European forest fruit

Bilberries is the plural of bilberry, a small dark blue berry closely related to the blueberry but native to Europe.

The shrub grows wild in moorlands and woodlands, and the berries have a more intense flavor than cultivated blueberries: We picked bilberries on the hillside.

Also called whortleberries in some regions.
