cowberries

Tart red fruits

Cowberries are small, tart red berries that grow on low evergreen shrubs in northern forests and tundra.

Also called lingonberries or mountain cranberries, they're harvested wild across Scandinavia and northern North America, where they're made into preserves and sauces: The Swedish meatballs came with a side of cowberry jam.
