gooseberries

Sour green fruit

Gooseberries are small, tart berries that grow on thorny shrubs, typically green or reddish and covered with fine hairs.

They're used in jams, pies, and preserves, and are more common in British cooking than American: gooseberry fool, gooseberry crumble.

In British slang, to play gooseberry is to be an unwanted third person with a couple.
