blackberries

Dark bramble fruit

Blackberries are the dark purple-black fruit of a thorny bramble, composed of small drupelets clustered around a core.

They grow wild in hedgerows and are cultivated for eating fresh, in jams, and in desserts: We picked blackberries along the fence line.

The plural also refers to the plants themselves: The blackberries have taken over the back corner of the yard.
